South Africa is well known for producing quality Sauvignon Blancs. If you’ve never tried a red from there, the Ridge Syrah from Graham Beck will leave a lasting first-impression. It certainly impressed David Snyder, an instructor at the Wine School of Philadelphia, and food and wine writer for Philadelphia’s City Paper.

This Syrah is made from fruit from The Ridge vineyard, which distinguishes itself from Graham Beck’s other sites by the thick layer of “Karoo” soil above its limestone base. The earth in this vineyard contributes to the wines spicy aromas and rich, well structured taste. This wine is a steal for under $20.

Mr. Snyder and the Philly’s Wine School distinguish themselves with their teaching methods. They build confidence in the students with a sensory-perception based approach, allowing people to gain a strong familiarity with what a varietal truly tastes like. They are also involved with a number of events to help expose people to wine.
