This week’s pick comes from Eric Platt, wine director at Washington Wholesale Pinnacle House, and importer and wholesaler serving the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Eric is a big fan of this Spanish estate wine, named after the limestone “caliza” subsoil that imparts distinctive minerality to a blend of Syrah and Graciano. If you like reds with overt tannins, try this wine with tender meats like a slow-roasted pork shoulder.

This wine can be purchased for less than $20, and offers an opportunity to sample and alternative to Spain’s popular Tempranillo and Granacha from Rioja. The Dominio de Valdepusa estate holds the status of a single appellation, in recognition of its unique terroir.
