I once half-jokingly suggested in an e-mail newsletter that my customers should boycott California wines after the state passed Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. Boy did I get an earful in response. Actually, I'm kind of surprised there's not already a Drink Red or Drink Blue website (sad to say that my party didn't get the good color where wine is concerned...)

Seriously, though, if it's important enough to you, why not ask? Or if it's obvious, like the situation you described, make a decision to drink something else. It would be a shame if it kept you from something you really loved, but that's the beauty of the wine world -- there's always more.

I have to say I'm totally over the term Rhone Rangers. They're often good wines, but nothing like the real thing. Holly's Hill really pushes the association, but although I like their wines for what they are, they suffer by comparison in my opinion. They're nice and fruity, but miss the earthiness that you find in true Rhones. For instance, they have a wine that has a huge portion of Mourvedre, a grape you won't find in large amounts in most Rhone wines because it's too harsh -- but the CA version doesn't taste anything like French Mourvedre.

I wonder why the CA winemakers feel they have to give their wines that name. After all, there are plenty of 100% Grenache wines in Spain, and they wouldn't think of calling themselves Rhone clones.

I just picked up a bottle of 2005 Emigre at Wilton Discount Liquors in Wilton Manors, FL. They have a lot on sale for $29.99. The outer wrap of tissue paper on the bottles is damaged and stuck to the bottles.
I asked why such a high price and they explained what thewinee was. I bought one and it as good as your review describes. I usually buy bottles around the $10 and lower price range. This is a real treat for me since Aussie Barossa Valley wines are one of my favorites.
